Himalayan Sarcococca (Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis )

Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis (Himalayan Sarcococca). Zones 6-9, Sunset 14-24. Small slow growing sub-shrub-groundcover, wide spreading by underground runners up to 2 ft high x 8 ft wide, but slow to grow and not invasive – perfect polished dark green groundcover for shady location. Small narrow pointed leaves with smooth edges (unlike confusa or ruscifolia) give the plant nice uniform mounding look – could be trimmed – but you hardly would ever need it. In Bay Area rarely would grow above 1,5 ft. After fragrant flowers fade – blue-black fruits appear. If your garden style is formal – you will find this plant indispensable for shade – very nice low foundation planting, absolutely gorgeous along the shady pass-way or use as a border for shady perennial bed – install some kind of barrier to keep it in line with defined space and you will never regret you got acquainted with this plant. As it runs in the Family – deer resistant, with practically no pests or diseases; sometimes infested by scales – easy to control – spray with light horticultural oil to smother.
